You're Not The One For Me
I found out that Flogging Molly are releasing a new album on the 4th of March. Naturally, and with the financial backing of my sister, I have pre-ordered it. I downloaded via iTunes the Complete Control Sessions EP they released, which contained two live tracks from the aforementioned album; Requiem For A Dying Song and Float, the latter being the title track. My sister Laura Kubala-Ryan told me that she'd had this album for a while after it'd been leaked on the inter net. I decided not to download it, and told her so.
However, I then decided that as I'd paid for the album, I may as well download it. So I did... and to be honest, the album ain't all that. I'm quite disappointed. It has high points, such as Requiem, which is the opener, and Lightening Storm. Paddy's Lament also kicks ass. But the rest of the riffs seem to be a clone of the first track, and one track (Between a Man and a Woman) is an old song, still available on the official bootleg album Alive Behind The Green Door (an album that was recorded with one mic in front of the stage - no production or anything, very raw; die hard fans only I'd recommend) which was released shortly after Drunken Lullabies I believe. But I shall listen to it more, you can't get that much out of one listen. And anyway, it'd be awesome to be able to sing every word to every song at the gig in June. My Christ I cannot wait for that.
This weekend has been good. I've felt like it's been worth it, you know? Yesterday the idea was to wake up, go to work, get home, tidy and do my comic. I didn't do one for Friday, so I was going to make amends with a Saturday one. Instead, I tidied hurriedly and after an invitation to go drink wine and eat strawberries over at Niina's, thoughts of comics had left my mind entirely. I got to Niina's at around 4pm, armed with a bottle of £2.99, 14.5% red wine, and had finished it by 10, when we (myself, Niina, Jenni and Jenni's friend Ben - who seems fairly alright, and Sandra) went out to try to get to Evolution, this supposed rock nightclub, and reportedly the "skankiest nightclub in Worcester." When we arrived it seemed closed, and so we went next door to the Pig and Drum. Highlights included high fiving for no reason, headbutting, and Joy Division's Transmission which caused me to mosh in my seat and sing loudly for three or so minutes with Niina.
We ended up in Evolution - £5 to get in, for fuck's sake - and found that Kaz was working behind the bar. I do now distinctly remember her telling me she'd got a job there, but I didn't at the time, and so that was a nice surprise. We spent most of Evo outside in the music-less smoking area, before deciding that it was time to hit the Marrs Bar. We got to the queue and decided that enough was enough. Jenni couldn't keep her eyes open at this point, and Ben was the only one of us who seemed sober. Walked the ladies home before reaching my own door at about 3am. I wasn't tired so ate a tube of Pringles, drank some Diet Coke and watched an episode of The Smoking Room - which remains one of the best birthday gifts I have received. Fucking brilliant, that show.
Awoke at 11.45 this morning, but slept for a further hour. Decided at that point to get up, and turned the shower on. Shower needs a fucking hour to warm up so in the meantime I did some laundry and fucked around on Facebook. And here's where it gets interesting.
One of the comics I've recently discovered and find brilliant, Apathetic Rant, created a Facebook application to allow users to view his comic and spread the word. I thought that was a genius idea, and upon checking the comic today found out that the guy who draws it has posted his tutorial for creating the application. So I've spent most of the day trying to do it. I've done everything it says, but some coding must be wrong because once people add the application, instead of going to the main page it comes up with various syntax errors. No worries, Daniel is home tomorrow (he and Sofi have been away this weekend) and he is fluent in PHP. That will come in handy. I will take his knowledge, and in exchange show him the tutorial, I know he has a use for making Facebook apps.
I wrote and drew the comic in around 2 hours, finishing at 9pm today, which is incredibly early for the guy who generally does things on the last minute. I'm glad, it means I now have time to do what I want. Sadly, and I guess inevitably, this will mean that I will work some more on the Dead Ends site, which has never been finished. By God, I've got one hell of a storyline worked out tentatively which is going to fuck things up for the characters no end. For those of you who read it, some slight spoilers up ahead... well, not really. The Mac and Aoefe living situation is subject to change this week, however, and after tomorrow's comic it doesn't seem like anything could be the same again. We're definitely seeing the introduction of a new character in Steve Percival. There may be some more, I've not decided yet. But yes, I've taken 30 or so strips to give people ideas as to what these people are like, and now it's time to mix things up a bit.
And on that note, I'm to bed. Speak to y'all soon - and keep plugging me at dead-ends.co.uk, by gosh golly it means a lot.
