Musings

I don't have anything incredibly interesting or insightful; at the moment I want to write something and thus here we are.

Firstly, I guess I'll go straight to business. I'm going to be radically changing this website. I tell you all this as though some of you will care. I doubt you will. I won't go into details at this juncture, but I will say that jikokeno will be no more. This should happen by around this time next week. Tick tock.

On business, comics are sort of being sidetracked. It was really weird doing the 5 day week last week, cause I got to yesterday and thought "wow, I've not done a comic in a long while", when really it was the average 1 day in between. I guess as I've got nothing else to do whilst waiting for work to start.

Money. Whoa. That is a dire situation. In the next few weeks I've got to pay out:

  • My share of the gas bill: £40

  • My share of the electric bill: £155

  • My mobile telephone bill: £70

  • My personal loan payment: £65

Total comes to £330, and that's without food and water I'll need to live on until I get my first month's pay on the 21st of May. And what money do I actually have in my bank account? £66 of overdraft left. I guess some companies are gon' be really fucked off with me, huh?

Rant The First: What the fuck! On this spellcheck thing, the word "huh" is totally acceptable. That is not a word, it is a bastard American nonword, used when Americans can't think of an actually word to say, usually in answer to such horrifyingly complex questions such as "What's your name?" "How old are you?" and "What do you think about Bush's reign as your president?" I can't believe the spellcheck recognises it as a legitimate word. Urgh.

Rant The Second: As we're on the subject of stupid Americans, I might as well bring up something that's been bugging me for a while now. The American Perception of The English.

Have you seen Sliding Doors, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and John Hannah? That is one of the most American movies I've ever seen, and it's supposed to be British. All the characters, minus Jeanne Triplehorn's character, are meant to be English (well, Hannah is Scottish, but still). It makes me cringe when characters refer to Seinfeld, or use the word "shagging" in the same way one would use "fucking" ("I've got a shagging headache", for example), or various other Americanisms... at one point, Jerry, the cheating boyfriend character, jokingly says "well, we're going to have to take away your class one drugs." It's just shagging sad that the writers refused to research even the basic information for that line. British classification is alphabetical, you bloody idiots. The writers have thrown in a whole heap of stereotypes and not bothered to research the possibility that in England, we might do things a little differently. I've not seen the film in quite some time, so I can't be sure as to whether or not someone talks on their "cellphone", but I wouldn't put it past them.

British writers at least research any foreign characters to make sure they're not made into a laughing stock. Sliding Doors is a clever film, nicely done, and a great concept - so why ruin it by insulting English intelligence? It was obviously written for American audiences, so why bother going to the trouble of setting it in London?

There are other examples, but I think that was sufficient for one rant.

I have a playlist on iTunes called "17Requiem." The name's not important. Anyway, on this playlist I have various bands and albums - it's a playlist that's filled with heavy rock and feel good/feel angry music, and it's great for listening to at volumes which will inevitably destroy one's hearing function. For the sake of easy scrolling on my iPod, I've got the songs in alphabetical order. I decided to listen to these in order as opposed to shuffle, and it's been brilliant. I've been doing this since Monday and I'm currently up to Don't Wanna Fall In Love by Green Day. It's great, there are so many songs I've not heard in ages, cause let's face it, I don't really use my iPod for any longer than 5 songs to and from work. I'm loving it. Plus, I know some really great songs are upcoming in E, F and G. P is the one I'm really looking forward to.

I went to a psychology lecture on Wednesday. Met up with Elliott and Tammy in the canteen and just kinda followed them into the lecture. It was like being back at uni - everyone sitting there bored at the droning lecturer, and me doodling like a bastard. Haha, I've not doodled in ages, it was fun as hell. I may even do it next Wednesday.

Right, that's quite enough I think. I guess I'll crack on with the website. Woop!
